In 1990, Bill and Ted are sent to hell by the cyborgs. Cyborg Bill and cyborg Ted make time with the real Bill and Ted's girlfriends Joanna and Elizabeth and prepare to take the human Bill and Ted's place in the Battle of the Bands. With the help of their friend Rufus, the human Bill and Ted are forced to find a way out of hell, deal with the Grim Reaper, and talk to God himself, in their mission to get to the Battle of the Bands and stop the two cyborgs. Following their excellent adventure Bill and Ted prepare for their future as global role models despite the fact that they cannot see how it could ever happen. Meanwhile, in the future, Chuck De Nomolos has had enough and plots to rewrite history with him as the leader. He steals the time device and sends back his own creations, two evil robot versions of Bill and Ted, to kill the originals, replace them and destroy their legacy totally. Bill & Ted are understandably narked to be dead but are determined to make it out of hell and back to Earth to destroy their evil selves and save the day.

Narrative wise this film follows on from the excellent adventure of the original film and pretty much keeps the same silly sense of humour as well. The fact that the plot is nonsense is well hidden by the fact that it does actually have a nice flow to it although it certainly helps if you are into the moment with it. The story essentially allows yet another adventure, this time focusing on the afterlife (rather than time) before coming back to the real world for its climax. It is consistently silly but it is also consistently amusing with lots of nice slacker moments that take things to the daft extremes (the ongoing spoof of The Seventh Seal is a winner) and it is fair to say that, if you like the original then you'll definitely like this. It is very silly though and does rely on you liking the "dude" speak that hasn't dated that well, but it has enough goofy charm to it to be worth a try.

. The cast are pretty good although in this sort of thing it is quite difficult to judge someone's performance in a film like this. Reeves and Winter are, of course, excellent; they both fit their characters perfectly so perfectly in fact that it took many years for either of them to really get past these films. Sadler is a great reaper, although hardly the most intelligent of spoofs he is certainly a fun character. Support from Ackland, Carlin, Grier and others is OK but they are more or less just going along with the flow and they never threaten to get in the way of the title characters as they dominate the film.
